- Meta gave away a capable AI model that runs on a regular computer. On August 10, Mark Zuckerberg published a long essay arguing AI should belong to everyone, and released Muse Glimmer, a free model anyone can download and run without an internet connection. Free local AI is now a genuine option for privacy-sensitive work.
- Google's Gemini passed one billion monthly users. Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on August 11, days after a leadership shake-up in Google's AI division. Gemini is now the assistant most people will meet by default, whether they chose it or not.
- Google released Gemini 3.7 Flash on August 13 at about half the previous price, three weeks after the last version, and again gave no date for its flagship Pro model. The cheap-and-fast race continues; the premium race is stalling.
